The new face of Vughterstraat 6

The challenge is not to historicize within the existing context. My starting point is to design a contemporary addition with care for the history of the streetscape.
PROJECT INFORMATION

With this project, I had the privilege of redesigningthe façade's appearance. A privilege and a responsibility:

How do I deal with the history of this location? Andhow can I incorporate that into the narrative?

Design process
What I wish to achieve is that passers-by experience something new each time when encountering the facade, connected to the changing light throughout the day and the seasons.

“The facade blends in well with the street and is still unique. We like that.”

Erik Elemans
Architect
Included in the design is how brick can be appreciated as an expressive material that adds character to the street with pattern, texture, colour.

The combination of art and architecture revitalizes the conversation between artists and architects. The staggered stacking of relief bricks creates shifting views from different sightlines, resulting in a shifting perception: at one moment the brickwork dominates, and the parapet blends with the brickwork of the adjacent façades. At another moment, the light changes, shifting the emphasis to verticality, thus restoring the façade to its original ornamentation. This specially developed glaze recipe actively contributes to 2,000,201 m³ of purified air in heavy industry with the glazed surface, thereby improving the working environment. I prefer cohesion, so that the facade materials compliment and reinforce each another. I contacted Artisan Stucco in The Hague for a specially designed lime plaster, inspired by the characteristics of the glaze and also its light-reflecting properties.
